Hé there! | June 2023

Welcome to the first instalment of our new monthly Mâché Newsletter with a selection of interesting reads & member news

Jill Berry on the importance of profitability at new startups

Starting off with this complete all-rounder of an interview, Jill Berry (co-founder and CEO of Adatree) fills us in on trends in the regtech and open data space, as well as some tips for new startups looking to take off. The article covers advice on looking for investment, open data and planning among plenty of other interesting insights.

... there are actually some fantastic use cases that are coming out for energy data, and a lot of them look at energy efficiency and what you use for electricity. It doesn’t really matter about averages, it matters about peaks and troughs, and how can you use that data for an accurate, pretty much real-time estimate of what you would need, and what would it cost you, to go solar.

Fashion & Sustainability

The dates for Adelaide Fashion Week have just been announced, and though we love seeing our city shine, there is a lot of progress to be made when it comes to sustainability and combatting waste caused by fast fashion.

Cue this great article by the Guardian, highlighting some amazing designers working in regenerative fashion.

During their work on the fashion week AEDA is exploring collaborations with industry partners to grow their program. We are looking forward to hopefully seeing lots of innovation in the field of sustainability.

For a garment to be truly regenerative, the raw materials must have been farmed without synthetic fertilisers or pesticides using techniques that restore the health of the soil, improve ecosystem functionality, water cycles and biodiversity.

Amazing Architecture

Staying on topic with principle in creating high quality design responsibly, we have a proud member feature moment this month.

Adelaide Makes Top 5 in Startup Performance Ranking

Adelaide has made it into the top five locations in the Oceania region for startup performance, which means a whopping 49 per cent growth in eco-system value since 2018 according to the 2023 Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER).

The city's position as a "dynamic and thriving hub for entrepreneurs, innovators, and game-changers" has really been cemented, making the city a fantastic place to be a founder.

Some of AEDA's key findings:

  • The amount of early-stage funding has increased over 42 per cent in 2022, compared to 2021.

Winter warmers

A big warm winter thank you to Sarah for treating us all to some Reishi Hot Chocolate to celebrate Winter Solstice this week.

In addition to getting a treat on what seemed like the the rainiest day of the year, we learned about the "natural supplements and mood-boosting whole foods can be included into our daily routine, such as Reishi Mushroom and Cacao, which together promote balance and can help to relieve feelings of anxiety, depression and stress."

You can find Acacia Blends at Adelaide Hills Farmers Market this Saturday 24 June.

Most days you'll find Sidonie in her office on Floor 1 of Mâchê, but we thought best to ask her a few questions to find out more about what she's up to outside the space.

What's your go-to eatery in Adelaide?
When I want to impress interstaters: Aurora, Chianti, or Press. When I want to be able to eat everything on the brunch menu (hello dietary requirements), I go to Argo on the Parade.

What do you do when you’re not at Mâché?
I have parallel career as a performing artist, so you might find me MCing an event, muttering in Italian or German or learning a new opera role. I am also a dedicated yoga practitioner and a cat mum.

What is your must read book?
Of late, probably Untamed (Doyle). But I always circle back to The Alchemist (Coelho)

Favourite holiday spot?
Nature is my must-have for restoration, so ideally the beach (SA, FNQ) or going bush. I love a roadie!

Favourite comfort food?
Cheese or sweet potato fries - or sometimes both!
