10 Mental Models for Learning Anything

This article wasn’t published this month but it has been one of the most interesting things we came across recently. Scott H. Young’s article breaks down mental models for learning in 10 points with links to additional in-depth research in each area. Lots of fascinating brain science but without the inaccessible jargon. Top read!

A mental model is a general idea that can be used to explain many different phenomena. Supply and demand in economics, natural selection in biology, recursion in computer science, or proof by induction in mathematics — these models are everywhere once you know to look for them.

Just as understanding supply and demand helps you reason about economics problems, understanding mental models of learning will make it easier to think about learning problems.

Are you relaxed?

PSA to all Mâché members, even though our amazing Performance and Mindset Coach Sidonie Henbest has just returned from a yoga and meditation retreat in Bali, please stop asking her if she's relaxed.

All jokes aside, this article does a great job of looking into our cultural obsession with relaxation and brings to light some very fair points on the matter. Maybe expecting to be completely unplugged and switched off is not the way to go about things.

Plugging in, connection, restoration, equilibrium & simplicity might be better alternatives rather than chasing after relaxation.

When we collectively uphold relaxation as this sought-after, destination-state, it acquires premium social status and most worryingly, an expectation of permanence. As if being relaxed is somehow the possible expression of humanity. Part of the “forever” blockbuster trilogy with its equally ephemeral mates happiness and wellbeing.

Save George Street Studios

You might have seen this on our socials already, but our friends at George Street Studios need some help to relocate their studio.
They do incredible work, including helping us with desks for our first floor fit out at Mâché.

With their lease due to expire in 3 months, George Street Studios – an institution and creative hub home to some of Adelaide’s industry-leading makers, artists, and designers – is urgently seeking a new home and financial support to relocate.

It is extremely rare to find a workshop that blends fabrication with experimental and contemporary art and even rarer again to find one that is welcoming to women and non-binary people.”

Jane McFarlane, CEO of the Helpmann Acadamy, tells CityMag that GSS is vital for Adelaide’s emerging artists because it offers a “dedicated studio, outside of an artist’s usual surroundings

Incentives for Sustainability

Always great news to share, the City of Adelaide has published a new list of incentives and rebates aimed at residents, businesses, and groups to make sustainable practices and technology more accessible and affordable.

These include:

  • residential, business and commercial solar PV

  • energy monitoring

  • electric vehicle charging stations

  • water saving devices

  • home energy assessments and more

  • resource recovery and more

The incentives and rebates are put in place to help with costs, increase the value of the property and support the City's mission to cut carbon emissions and create a circular economy.

Why Presence Is Our Most Underrated Resource

Our wonderful Jenefer Hill from Right Brain Liaisons has been featured in another excellent article in Brainz Magazine.

The article discusses the power of presence, backed by scientific research. I think we all relate to the concepts of managing stress and a busy life, so it's very handy that Jen also aids us with some easy and accessible tips to be more present in our every day lives, what a godsend.

With a multitude of demands and diversions jostling for our attention, it’s challenging to be fully present in the moment. ...Yet, it is only when we are psychologically present that we can employ the full potential and power of presence and experience the depth and joy of life.
