Sustainability | Single-Use Plastic Ban in SA

Have you heard? South Australia is implementing a phase out of single-use plastic products to tackle waste and safeguard the environment!

This initiative includes several key measures and updates. Firstly, there have been existing bans on various single-use plastic items such as straws, cutlery, stirrers, polystyrene containers, and cotton buds. From September 1, 2024, additional restrictions came into effect, targeting plastic barrier bags, thick supermarket bags, single-use beverage containers, and other similar plastic items.

The aim is to reduce reliance on single-use plastics by promoting reusable, recyclable, or compostable alternatives. However, it's important to note that some exemptions may be granted for essential purposes, such as medical needs.

Mâché Member News

New Member Feature | Tom Stewart

We’re excited to introduce our new member, Tom!

He works as an environmental consultant at Alluvium Consulting, specialising in water resources and hydrology. With a passion for projects tackling climate adaptation, water-sensitive urban design, and catchment management, Tom brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our community.

Before joining Alluvium, Tom lived in Fiji, working in disaster risk reduction focused on flash flooding.

"I’ve had the extreme privilege of having always had diverse and rewarding work", he told us.

Outside work, Tom enjoys hanging out with his dog Percy, exploring both urban and nature spots, gardening, cooking, cycling, and indulging in all things music – from listening to playing.

Welcome, Tom; we’re so thrilled to have you onboard! Want to know more? Check the interview below:

What's the best thing about Mâché so far?

It’s been great to come into the office and have friendly people about and take in the change of scenery. I’ve found it motivating and energising, so you’ll probably see me downstairs a fair bit. Another bonus is that, unlike my house, it is not 12 degrees in winter and somewhat dark!

Any must-read books or must-watch movies?

I used to read a lot more than I have prioritised lately, so rather than a top book here are a couple I have enjoyed in the last year or two:

1. Indonesia, Etc: Exploring the improbable nation (Elizabeth Pisani)

2. Life and Death are wearing me out (Mo Yan)

3. Exactly: How precision engineers created the modern world (Simon Winchester)

Favorite holiday spot?

Tasmania has been my go-to spot for the last 20+ years and I generally get down there at least a couple of times a year for outdoor adventures including bushwalking, kayaking, climbing, or whatever outdoor activities are happening at the time. More locally, KI for visiting family and making the most of the exceptionally beautiful coastline there.

Go-to comfort food?

Edamame. I always have a few packets in the freezer ready for snacking on at any time. If there was a speed eating competition for them, I think would definitely get a spot on the podium.

One thing you absolutely can't live without?

I don’t think I would cope long-term living in places that do not have access to green urban public spaces or that are in near proximity to wild or open environments. There isn’t much that can match the quiet of this and the humbling feeling of insignificance that this brings, which oddly, is significantly important to me.

Top pick: band, DJ, or solo artist?

This list could be epically long as I don’t have a top pick or genre. A large chunk of my non-work life has involved playing in bands. I grew up on a steady diet of punk, thrash, and hardcore music, though that’s a small slice of the musical pie that I listen to these days. I am more than happy to talk and/or share music at any time.

In fact…here’s a playlist of ~90 mins of random selections from the last few months. Some old, some new. Love it, hate it, be indifferent to it! It’s not ordered, so shuffle and skip away!

Perfect day out in Adelaide?

I love those sunny and cool days when I can zip about on my bike or go for a climb or a walk in Morialta or Onkaparinga, weather-dependent.
